Following the adoption of a motion of urgent national importance by the member representing Tarauni Federal constituency of Kano State, Hafiz Kawu, the House of Representatives yesterday set up an adhoc committee to investigate alleged theft of about N20 billion by staff of the Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited, NNPCL.

The Committee headed by Hon. Kingsley Chinda is expected to complete its work within three weeks and report back to the House.
Moving the motion, the lawmaker alleged that staff of NNPCL were reported to have diverted the funds under the guise of consultancy fees paid to Messrs Sapphire.
The diverted funds, he said, were part of the money meant for the payment of taxes to state governments by the corporation.
He expressed concern that “at a time when the federal government is doing its best to fight corruption and harnesses resources for the development of infrastructure, staff of a government agency ought to be prudent in the utilization of state resources not to corruptly divert same.”
According to him, “if action is not taken urgently by the House to nip the unethical and unwholesome practice in the bud, it would negatively affect the fortunes of our nation, as well as deprive other state governments of its revenue, especially coming on the heels of mountainous debts being accumulated by the nation at present,” he lamented.(agency)/SHARE THIS
