The spokesman of the Supreme Court, Festus Akande, has assured that the Monday morning fire incident at a wing of the Supreme Court complex in Abuja will not affect the presidential election petitions of LP candidate, Mr Peter Obi and his PDP counterpart, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.
Akande emphasised this during an interview on Arise TV, saying that the fire incident would not impact the court proceedings in any way.
The incident, which occurred on Monday morning, affected chambers equipped with computers, equipment, and a functional library used by a justice occupying the chamber.
However, Akande clarified that it was only the books and computer equipment that were affected, and they were replaceable.
He attributed the incident to an electrical fault, stating that it was not related to the court proceedings and could happen anywhere due to daily occurrences.
He said: “As a matter of fact, there’s no single connection, and it won’t affect anything in the court.
“This incident occurred in a chamber equipped with a computer and other equipment, as well as a functional library used by any justice occupying such chamber.
“The only thing that was affected was the books and computer equipment in the chamber. Even the books are replaceable.
“Also, it has nothing to do with it because it was from an electrical fault, which could happen anywhere, and these are things that happen daily”, he concluded.
The State Online reports that a mysterious fire broke out in the hours of Monday, beginning from a section of the chambers of a Justice of the Supreme Court, Mohammed Saulawa.
Witnesses said it took the timely intervention of the court’s and the federal fire services to put out the fire suspected to have started in the chambers located on the third floor of the sprawling court complex.
Supreme Court spokesperson, Festus Akande, confirmed the incident, saying it was not as serious as speculated on social media platforms.
“Yes, there was a fire that perhaps resulted from an electrical fault in the section of a justice’s chambers of a justice of the court. But the fire is not as serious as they make it appear on social media. From what is being said on social media, it is as if someone went there and set the whole Supreme Court on fire; it is not so,” Mr Akande said.
Mr Akande, who declined to give the identity of the Justice of the Supreme Court whose chambers were gutted by the fire, said the fire outbreak started after staff resumed office.
