Confusion was palpable at the Aso Rock seat of power today, as the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Chief Timipre Sylva, resigned from the Federal Executive Council without the usual fanfare.
Though he decided to keep it to his chest, Bashir Ahmad, President Muhammadu Buhari’s Special Assistant on Digital Communications, confirmed his resignation in a tweet on Friday, March 31, 2023.
Sylva, it was discovered, resigned to participate in the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primaries in Bayelsa next month.
“Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, and former Bayelsa State governor, H.E. Timipre Sylva, has resigned his appointment to contest in the next Bayelsa governorship election,” Ahmad tweeted.
Sylva has only governed Bayelsa for one term and has constitutional rights to contest for another term, Ahmad clarified.
When contacted, the spokesman for the minister, Horatius Egua said he could not deny or confirm the resignation because he had not seen the resignation letter neither had the minister briefed him officially about the resignation.
Chief Sylva is leaving the oil and gas industry when he is direly needed, amidst the flaming confusion presently endemic in the subsector./SHARE THIS
