At last, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared Alex Otti of the Labour Party (LP) winner of the Abia State governorship election, which held on Saturday, March 18, 2023.
This followed Otti’s trouncing of the incumbent Gov Okezie Ikpeazu’s Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate to unseat the ruling party in the state.
Otti polled a total of 175, 467 votes to defeat his closest rival, Chief Okey Ahiwe, of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party who scored 88,529 votes.
Enyinnaya Nwafor of the Young Peoples Party (YPP) came third with 28,972 votes.
Returning Officer and Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology Owerri, FUTO, Professor Nnenna Oti, subsequently declared Otti the Governor-elect having polled the highest number of votes and satisfied all necessary conditions.
Recall that collation of the election result was earlier suspended over violence, but was resumed at about 4pn today, after INEC concluded the review of the exercise in the state.
Even before the suspension of collation, Otti was said to have been in clear lead which may have generated some level of misgivings among disappointed interests, leading to INEC’s suspension of the exercise./SHARE THIS
