26-year-old young lady Rukayyat Shittu wins state assembly seat in Kwara

A 26-year-old young lady, Rukayat Motunrayo Shittu, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for Owode/Onire State Constituency Election in Asa Local Government Area of Kwara State, North Central Nigeria, has been declared the winner of the State Assembly elections held on Saturday, March 18 by the Independent National Electoral Commission, (INEC).

The young APC candidate, who is a journalist, polled 7,521 to defeat her rival in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who scored 6,957.

This made her one of the youngest candidates in Nigeria to contest and win a political seat.

Speaking after being declared the winner, Rukayat said she felt privileged to be pronounced winner of the election in Owode/Onire constituency and appreciated her party, leaders of the party, and voters for giving her what she described as a rear opportunity.

“Youth and women are being sidelined in Nigerian politics but Governor Abdulrahman AbdulRazaq has shaped the face in Kwara. I will make sure I improve and encourage youth and women participation in the polity,” she said.

Rukayyat is a former Senate President of the Congress of NOUN Students (CONS) at the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) and a journalist.

She attended Baptist Primary School LGEA in Ilorin, and Government Girls Day Secondary School, Oko Erin to obtain her Senior Secondary School Certificate in 2011. She proceeded to Kwara State College of Arabic and Islamic Legal Studies affiliated with Bayero University Kano where she got a diploma certificate in Mass Communication and Islamic Studies in 2015.

After her diploma, she enrolled in a fashion school, and in 2017, she was admitted to the National Open University of Nigeria from where she graduated in 2022.

She worked as head of the news department for an online media platform in Kwara, Just Event Online./SHARE THIS
