Senator Abdullahi Adamu, has tendered his resignation as the National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to avert humiliation arising from impeachment by party stalwarts said to be close to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
According to reports, Adamu tendered his resignation letter on Sunday night, July 16, 2023, to Presidential Villa, Abuja, ahead of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s return from the African Union (AU) meeting in Kenya.
A source said Adamu, a former governor of Nasarawa State, sent the resignation letter to the Chief of Staff of the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, at about 4:00pm on Sunday.
“He has resigned,” a reliable source said. “The resignation letter signed by him has been sent to the Villa. The letter was addressed to President Tinubu. But since the president is away in Kenya for the AU meeting, the letter was sent to his chief of staff.”
Confirming this, another source close to Adamu disclosed: “The National Chairman resigned following a gang up by people around the president to embarrass him during the meetings of the party slated for tomorrow and Wednesday.”
However, the meetings were later postponed and rescheduled for tomorrow and Wednesday.
A founding member of the party said Adamu resigned when he got wind of two influential personalities around the president mobilising against him ahead of the meetings.
“He resigned because they have started to collate signatures to impeach him during the forthcoming meetings. He resigned to save himself from humiliation,” the top politician said.
When contacted by Daily Trust, Adamu said that he will not comment on the matter until President Tinubu returns from the AU’s meeting.
“I won’t talk about the issue because the president is away,” Adamu who was the preferred candidate of former President Muhammadu Buhari for the chairmanship seat, said.
…As NWC kicks
However, an NWC source disclosed that they were disappointed by the action of the former Nasarawa governor, who he said did not deem it important to even address them before submitting his resignation letter.
He said: “We just heard the news this evening too like every other person that the chairman has resigned. I understand it was a directive from the presidency. I learnt it was the Chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum, Hope Uzodinma, who personally handed over the president’s letter to him.
