Non-stop rains in the Federal Capital Territory of Abuja has wreaked havoc in the city’s popular estate, Trademore, sweeping out a resident and properties worth millions of naira on Friday.
The heavy downpour, which started as early as 6:00am left the popular Trademore estate in Lugbe submerged, throwing residents in disarray.
Properties worth millions were damaged and destroyed during the accompanying flood with residents scampering to safety.
The resultant flooding made the estate environment look like a canal, requiring boats to navigate through with all the cars packed outside submerged.
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) confirmed to reporters at the estate that a Peugeot 406 driver with a registration no. YLA 681 FS was drowned in the flood while four other persons were rescued.
Trademore Estate has suffered devastating effects of flood over the years but residents heaved a sigh of relief during the 2022 rainy season when they were not affected – the reason why they felt a little cautious this year.
A resident Samuel Omole, said some cars were swept away by the flood.
He blamed the incident on the promoters of an estate in the neighbourhood who channeled water towards their area.
The State Online recalls that the Federal Ministry of Water Resources, through its agency, Nigerian Hydrological Service Agency (NIHSA) had, during the earlier part of the year, in its Annual Flood Outlook, warned that this year’s flooding will be more devastating than last year’s when properties worth millions of naira and lives were destroyed, advising citizens to cautious.(agency)/SHARE THIS
