The Lagos State Police Command has clarified that there was no fire outbreak at the Alaba International Market in the Ojo Local Government Area of the state.

What happened, according to Lagos police, was that police from Ojo Division purposely burnt down some shanties in the market after arresting some suspected criminals and recovering some dangerous weapons. The fire, unfortunately, festered to the market environment, consuming goods worth millions of naira.
Revealing this in his popular Twitter account, Lagos Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, said: “This is a false narrative! Acting on credible information, police officers from Ojo Division raided shanties around the market, arrested suspected criminals and recovered some weapons. The shanties were thereafter set on fire,” he tweeted.
The traders reportedly resorted to self-help to put out the fire which started on Friday morning before the arrival of emergency responders.
A statement by the Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, informed that the incident had degenerated into a security situation as officials of the agency were unable to gain access into the market.
Adeseye’s statement reads: “Report reaching Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service indicates shops at the popular Alaba International Market, Ojo, Lagos are on fire.
“However, Fire Crew from Ojo, Sari-Iganmu and Ajegunle are being turned back by angry mobs from performing their statutory duty but presently on standby. We are collaborating with security agents to address the situation.” However, clearing the air on the incident on his popular Twitter handle, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, said there was no fire incident, adding that it was police that razed down criminal hideouts in the market. He re-emphasised: “This is a false narrative! Acting on credible information, police officers from Ojo Division raided shanties around the market, arrested suspected criminals and recovered some weapons.
