The candidate of the All Progressives Congress candidate in Saturday’s governorship election in Edo State, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has been declared winner of the election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Okpebholo polled 291,667 votes to defeat his closest rival, candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Asue Ighodalo who, who scored 247,274
A breakdown of the results showed that Okpebholo won in Esan West, Owan West, Uhunmwonde, Egor, Akoko-Edo, Esan Central, Orhionmwon, Owan East, Etsako Central, Etsako West, Etsako East and Oredo.
Ighodalo won in Igueben, Esan South East, Esan North East, Ovia North East, Ovia South West and Ikpoba Okha.
The candidate of the Labour Party, Olumide Akpata, who polled 22,763 votes, did not win any of the 18 local government areas of the state.
The state returning officer, Professor Faruq Adamu Kuta, Vice Chancellor, Federal University of Technology (FUT), Minna, Niger State, declared Okpebholo winner of the election late Sunday evening.

Collation of Results Resumes
A breakdown of the results declared by INEC at the State Collation Centre on Sunday showed that Okpebholo won in Esan West, Owan West, Uhunmwonde, Egor, Akoko-Edo, Esan Central, Orhionmwon, Owan East, Etsako Central, Etsako West, and Etsako East.
Ighodalo won in Igueben, Esan South East, Esan North East, Ovia North East and
Ovia South West.
The candidate of the Labour Party, Olumide Akpata, did not win any of the 16 local government areas so far announced.
Security beefed up at INEC office
There was a heavy presence of security operatives on Sunday at the Edo State office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as collation of results for the Saturday governorship election commenced.
Roadblocks were mounted 500 metres away in all the roads leading to the office by men of the Nigerian Army.
The routes leading to the office were closed to vehicular movement just as only accredited individuals were allowed access to the place.
The individuals were subjected to thorough screenings by men of the Nigerian Police as well as the military operatives at the venue.
INEC announced on Saturday that collation of results from the 18 local governments of the state would begin by 10am on Sunday. (NAN)(agency)///
