As the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON) celebrates its 60th anniversary, the Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Mohammed Bello Matawalle, has said that the country is working diligently to advance its defence capabilities through strategic partnerships, innovation, and technological advancements that align with modern realities.
The Minister made this remark on Wednesday, during the DICON 60th anniversary celebration and maiden African Defence Industries conference in Abuja .
He highlighted that the new DICON Act 2023 has the potential to significantly contribute to Nigeria’s national development and security by boosting foreign exchange earnings through the local production of defence equipment.
Dr. Matawalle revealed that the Ministry of Defence has received a mandate from President Bola Tinubu to strengthen DICON and other coordinating agencies to fulfill their mandate of hardware and equipment production while creating jobs for skilled Nigerians.
He explained that with this approval, all government agencies must prioritize the procurement of arms and ammunition from local sources. This measure is expected to curb capital flight to foreign nations and enhance the Corporation’s chances of leading future advancements in defence technology and innovations across Africa.
The Minister noted that DICON, established 60 years ago, has been at the forefront of contributing to national development through the manufacturing of defence equipment. He described the anniversary celebration as a testament to the Corporation’s journey of innovation, resilience, and dedication to the nation’s protective ideals.
According to him, “DICON was established in 1964 and has since been at the forefront of Nigeria’s defence manufacturing, significantly contributing to national security and technological advancement.
“This 60th anniversary marks a significant milestone in our journey of innovation, resilience, and dedication to the defence needs of our nation.
“Today, DICON is celebrating 60 years of dedicated service in the production and repair of military hardware and equipment. Since its establishment, DICON has played a crucial role in Nigeria’s defence sector, collaborating with indigenous companies to achieve excellence in military manufacturing.
“DICON’s journey began with a modest start, focusing on the production of small arms and ammunition. Over the years, the Corporation expanded its capabilities to include the manufacture of military vehicles, artillery, and other defence equipment. Despite facing challenges, DICON has persevered, driven by its commitment to self-reliance and national security.
“The 60-year journey is a testament to Nigeria’s commitment to self-reliance in defence production. Through collaboration and innovation, the Corporation has established itself as a key player in the defence sector. As DICON continues to evolve, its contributions will remain crucial to Nigeria’s national security and economic growth.”
The Minister also revealed that many African countries are now seeking to procure their military and paramilitary hardware from DICON, a development he described as beneficial for the nation and a demonstration of DICON’s advancement.
Also speaking, the Director General of DICON, Major-General Aniedi Effiong, disclosed that the agency is working towards the local production of complete armaments and uniforms.
The DG emphasized, “Everything a soldier wears and carries should be a product of DICON.”
He commended the support received from the Ministry and President Bola Tinubu, which he said has been a source of inspiration and encouragement./###
