The Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (ie) has reduced electricity tariff for Band A customers from N225/kWh to N206.80/kWh ahead of NANS’nationwide protest, May 7.
The Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) had previously mandated N225/kwh, but ie’s management revealed in a circular on Monday that customers will now pay N206.80/kwh instead.
Revealing this in a statement today, May 6, the distribution company said: “Dear esteemed customers, please be informed of the downward tariff review of our Band A feeders from N225/kwh to N206.80/kwh effective May 6, 2024, with guaranteed availability of 20–24 hours of supply daily. The tariff for Bands B, C, D, and E remains unchanged.”
Recall that in April, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) approved the increase of Band A feeders in Mainland Lagos by 66.7 percent to 85, up from the initial 51.
The Head of Corporate Communication at Ikeja Electric, Mr. Kingsley Okotie, confirmed the development in a statement.
The sstatement said: “Effective today, April 13th, 2024, and based on our demonstrated ability to consistently provide a minimum of 20 hours of daily availability during a performance evaluation period monitored by the regulator, we are pleased to announce that we have obtained approval to add 34 additional Band A feeders to our network.
“This brings our total from 51 to 85, with the breakdown as follows: 51 at 11kV, 31 at 33kV, and 3 at 132 kV.”
But soon after the announcement,, electricity customers, especially students, began to grumble, calling for immediate reversal of the increase.
The National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, particularly charged for the removal of the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu for peace to reign.
NANS said it is concerned about the challenges faced by Nigerians as a result of inconsistent electricity supply, high tariffs, joined with the ongoing fuel crisis.
To this end, it made the decision to organize a nationwide protest on Tuesday, May 7, 2024, and has asked for the support of fellow Nigerians./PLEASE SHARE
