The former President, Muhammadu Buhari, has praised his successor, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for performing well since getting to office despite the economic hardship experienced by Nigerians across the country.
According to Buhari, there isn’t much anybody can do to help the country at this time, while noting that Nigeria is “so complex”.
The country’s economic hardship skyrocketed after Buhari left office on May 29, 2023.
On the inauguration day, Tinubu declared that his administration would no longer subsidise fuel, hence calling for the end of the financing because it was essentially beneficial to neighbouring countries and greedy Nigerians.
His decision made the price of the Premium Motor Spirit rise from N185 to over N630.
Also, as part of his government’s reforms in the financial sector, the naira has embarked on a continuous free fall against the dollar after the Central Bank of Nigeria floated the currency to move towards market-determined rates.
This action has led to the instability of the naira to the dollar in the market, making it sell for between N1,400 and N1,900, and still climbing.
The State Online reports how ex-President Buhari had recently pooh-poohed President Tinubu’s economic policies that precipitate economic hardship in Nigeria, saying: “You can now compare between us.”
The former president was quoted to have said this in a statement by Stanley Nkwocha, spokesperson for Vice President Kashim Shettima, who visited Buhari in Duara, Katsina, on a Friday.
Buhari’s commendation of the current administration comes as protests have continued across Nigeria over the high cost of living and food prices.
In the face of Nigeria’s economic downtown, celebrities like Fuji musicians Wasiu Ayinde Marshal aka “KWAM1” and Olaiya Igwe, who campaigned for Tinubu, have raised the alarm over the rising cost of food in the country.
Also, the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar-led Northern Traditional Council, warned that rising poverty, hunger and insecurity will soon force people to revolt against President Tinubu’s government.
A forthnight ago, Nigerians protested skyrocketing food prices in Ibadan, Oyo State capital, chanting “Tinubu Ole!” “No more Emilokan!” Similar protests had held in Osun, Niger, Kano and Lagos, President Tinubu’s home state.
Tinubu, in response to public outcry on the rising cost of food, had directed the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security to release about 42,000 metric tonnes of grains , including maize, millet and garri.
Only recently also, there has been report of how citizens had raided a government-owned warehouse in Abuja, looting food and other items./PLEASE SHARE
