The controversy trailing the conferment of chieftaincy titles on the senator representing Anambra South senatorial zone, Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, has refused to abate, with three traditional rulers in Anambra State officially ignominiously withdrawing the titles from him.

The traditional rulers are Igwe F.E. Ebelendu of Aguluezechukwu in Aguata Local Government Area, Igwe Onwuamaeze Damian Ezeani of Neni in Anaocha Local Government Area and Igwe Gerald Obunadike Mbamalu of Ojoto in Idemili South Local Government Area.
Igwe Mbamalu conferred Ikemba Ojoto on Ubah, Igwe Ezeani conferred on him the Odenjiinji Neni, while Igwe Ebelendu gave him Dike Eji Eje Ogu.
Since the exercise, the embattled monarchs have been facing a lot of criticism from their subjects and the state government for their actions, which forced them to make a u-turn.
Press Secretary to Governor Chukwuma Soludo, Mr Christian Aburime, in a statement, said the monarchs have respectively apologized to the Anambra State Government and withdrawn and cancelled the chieftaincy titles conferred on Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, because it contravenes the State Traditional Rulers’ law.
Aburime’s statement reads inter alia: “This action by the three traditional rulers was in direct contravention of the State Traditional Rulers’ code, which outlines the rules and regulations regarding the granting and revocation of chieftaincy titles.
“Consequently, the titles of Ikemba Ojoto, Odenjiinji Neni and Dike Eji Eje Ogu earlier bestowed on Senator Ifeanyi Ubah have been withdrawn and cancelled by the three Igwes.
“This was contained in their respective letters of apology to the state government which also confirmed the withdrawal and cancellation of the chieftaincy titles which they variously described as nullity.”
The State Online recalls that Senator Ubah had late last year joined the All Progressives Congress (APC), and he is rumoured to be nursing governorship ambition to wrest power by all means from the incumbent governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo in next year’s governorship election.
Senator Ifeanyi Ubah said during decamping to APC, “the Bola Tinubu presidency has been super fair to the South-East and that the President has more ‘’good things” in stock for the region.
Ubah, who represents Anambra South in the upper chambers said this on Channels TV hours after he dumped the YPP and defected to the ruling APC.
For someone winning election back to back, you know that you must be close to your people and you must always consult widely with your people. So for me to join the APC, I did my consultation and then I listened to the voice of my people.
If you look at the APC today, you will discover that the President [Bola Tinubu] has been super fair to the South-East irrespective of our votes during the elections. Giving us the minister of works [David Umahi] is something that would not have been possible in the past. [There are] other appointments that are coming and so many other good things he wants to do for our people.” he said.
Ubah added that the region has much to benefit from keying into the APC and does not want the South-East to be left behind.
“So, it is very important for us now to join the centre party so that we would not be left behind. The entire South-East is joining where I am going. Just watch and see what is going to be in the next few weeks,” he noted, saying some of the people expected to join the APC include senators and other major stakeholders in the South-East.
Shortly after his defection to APC, Ubah began to receive invitations for chieftaincy titles from many traditional rulers in the state, a development the state government frowned at./PLEASE SHARE
