TINUBU STOPS NAFDAC FROM BANNING ALCOHOL SATCHETS FOR NIGERIANS OVER RAVAGING POVERTY IN THE LAND

The Nigerian Federal Government, under President Bola Tinubu, has ordered NAFDAC to suspend the ban on sachet alcohol and 200ml PET bottle drinks. The directive, issued in February 2026, aims to prevent economic disruption and protect jobs, with officials citing concerns over the policy’s impact on businesses and the economy.

Key details:

  • Suspension Directive:The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) ordered NAFDAC to stop sealing factories and warehouses.
  • Reasoning:The intervention was driven by concerns regarding the security and economic implications of the ban, particularly amid high poverty levels, with claims it could threaten up to 1 million jobs.
  • Context:While NAFDAC claimed the ban was to protect youth from alcohol harm, the government deemed the enforcement timing inappropriate.

The ban was originally intended to start in 2024 but was delayed, with the latest enforcement action being halted on February 11, 2026. ////
